Focus: MIXED MEDIA

Scene: the place where an action or event, real or imaginary, occurs.

Background:. the part, as of a scene, situated in the rear (opposed to foreground).

Middle Ground: refers to the focal area of a art, and lies between the foreground and background.

Foreground: the part of the art that is "before" or "in front," in the art work

TOOLBOX:
Paper
Black/Brown Marker
Paintbrush
Water Color (whatever you have access to
ex. tint water with food coloring)

ACTIVITY

On your paper, create your background
with your "watercolor" medium
Fill up the entire page.
Let it dry before starting next step.

Options

Gradient color background
Pointelle dot background
Abstract background

With your marker, draw random lines,
thick and thin, representing tree branches.

Finally, use your tissue paper, newsprint or cut paper to create buds.
Sporadically

Add as many or as little buds that you'd like.
Don't forget to share.

TODAY'S TOOLS

Paper, pencil(graphite or colored), markers, crayon, chalk/pastels

[Choose the medium that is available or that you are comfortable with]

For Still Life - pick a few objects from around the house

ex. Cup, bowl, fruit

For Figure Drawing - pick someone who can sit still for a few minutes, 

& is easy on the eyes :) lol
Or catch someone while they're doing something like reading, sleeping.

Puzzles come in a variety of  types:

ACTIVITY:

Make a Puzzle

Today's Tools: 

old magazines, scissors,  glue, blank sheet of paper, ruler or straight edge.

search through old magazines

find an image that is appealing and tear it out (choose multiple images)

Using the ruler or a straight edge mark off the jagged edges and using the scissor cut a clean edge.

                

Cut your entire image into equal squares.

Hint: if you fold the image in half, in half 2nd time, in half 3rd time and so on....you will have folded lines easy to cut on as a guide.

(for advanced students, try asymmetrical shapes)

                       

FUN ACTIVITY

• Mix up your cut images pieces
• time yourself to see how long it takes to complete the puzzle.
• Use a stopwatch or timer to race against time to complete the puzzle.
• Compete against others.

ART PART

                  

If you're are feeling creative, 

use the puzzle pieces to assemble a collage. Glue pieces down randomly or with purpose 

to create an individual piece of artwork 

on your blank paper.

Activity: WEAVING

WEAVING

FOCUS: Upcycling Threads

Weaving creates a pattern. 

The pattern is created by a repeat action.....

over...under...over...under

Because I like for all children to have the opportunity to create, we use found and upcycled materials

The THREADS can be old yarn, shoe laces, tshirt scraps, paper strips, or salvaged plastic bag strips.....

WHAT YOU NEED:

Cardboard 

Found Threads

Scissors 

Popsicle Stick

Pencil

Ruler

• Measure and cut your cardboard into desired shape....SQUARE or RECTANGLE
• Along one edge, Find the center of your shape and mark it.
• Using your ruler for assistance, mark off every 1"form the center.
• Do the same, at the opposite end of your shape.
• Using your scissors, snip into each mark, at least 1/4" in.
• [On both sides with the markings]
• Tape your thread at one end of your cardboard loom.
• Run the thread down to opposite side of the loom, run the thread behind the cut "tooth" and bring to the front [repeat]
• [Remember to keep the action at the front of the loom, no looping on the back]
  
  
  

When this is done your cardboard loom is set to start weaving.

Using your other threads, start at the left or right side of the vertically strung thread.
Start your over under action...weaving.
When you get to the end, loop and continue pattern back.......repeat until your piece is complete.
*becaware of tension, with your piece, dont pull too tight, it my cause bottle necking.

Activity: Recycled Print

FOCUS: Egg Crates

An egg carton can be made of various materials, including foamed plastics such as polystyrene foam, clear plastic or may be manufactured from recycled paper and molded pulp by means of a mechanized papier-mâché process.

TODAY'S TOOLS

Egg Cartons 

(preferably made of recycled materials)

Paint, Paper, Paintbrush, and scissors.

Using the carton's natural shape, 

Cut Pieces to be used in your prints.

Pour paint out onto a paint pallet.

[pallet: paper plate, wax paper, old dish..]

Dip & Press your cut egg carton pieces into paint, then onto your blank paper.

Fill up the space.

Overlap, be deliberate with placement, accidentally place a print....make a pattern

CREATE.

ACTIVITY: Water & Wax

WATER & WAX

FOCUS: Water Color Resist

def. Resist: to withstand the action or effect of...

Tools: 

paper, crayons, water colors 

(if you dont have watercolors, tint water with food coloring)

           paintbrush, and cup for water.

CREATE

With crayons, draw your desired scene, abstract, portrait, still life (your choice)

Only use basic lines to create image.

Use watercolor or tinted water to fill up the spaces of your image. 

Paint right over the crayon lines. 

You will notice that the crayon will "resist"

 the water color and stand out from the pigment.

Let your artwork air dry.

Notice the contrast of color and texture. Both lending themselves to the look of your art.

THINK:

* Why don't the crayon and the watercolor mix?

*How can you use the crayon to add texture to the image?

Make multiple images, try different variations.

Today we will learn & have fun with PAPER :)

Both pictures below are close-ups of PAPER.

(actual fibers)

One is loose or light weight, like newsprint or tissue paper.

The other is compressed or heavy paper, like card stock.

What is a fiber?

Can you tell which is which?

Collect a variety of scraps or pieces of paper.
Observe, feel and discuss differences in your samples.

*if you tear the paper samples, you should be able to see the fibers. (Hint:they look like hairs)

Art Project: Basic Texture Collage

What you Need:

Various papers, colors, textures, prints

Glue 

Scissors

1 blank solid color sheet

Scavenger hunt for paper.....With your found colorful, household, discarded scraps of paper..

Tear: create various shapes with natural edges

Layer: cut squares, circles (any shape) 

in various sizes. 

Roll: tear or cut strip lengths of paper and roll, you can pinch, flatten, connect

Create enough samples of each 

to use for your artwork.

Creatively, objectively or abstractly adhere your samples to one plain piece of paper, using glue or tape, making your creation the focus.

with home-made Clay. 

(New Spin on old Activity)

Home-made Dough Clay How-To:
4c. Flour
2c Salt
2c Cold Water
Storage: Tupperware or Plastic Baggie

Relief 
a sculptural technique, where your sculpture remains attached to a solid background of the same material. 

The term relief is from the Latin verb relevo, to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane.

Mount Rushmore

With a portion of the clay that you've made, 

roll out a surface shape. You can use a rolling pin, cup etc. Use a butter knife, if you want to finish edges.

Have kids create a figure, face, bird , foot... :)

Whatever they are interested in, with a piece of clay. Lay on top of your surface shape.

Mush or blend edges of figure into surface until they adhere to surface area.
Use household tools to create texture and shape on sculpture.

Place on cookie sheet 

and bake at 200 for 20 mins.

(More or Less depending on thickness of sculpture)

Let clay sculpture air dry.

Add Color

You can use watercolor, tempera, or make tinted water with food coloring.
